Estero High wide receiver Austin Smith has noticed some improvements in his Wildcats.

Estero High, which hasn’t had a winning season in five years, is gearing up to turn that around by hiring new offensive coordinator, Brad Vojcak.

Vojcak will be tasked with reshaping the Wildcats’ offense, which was outscored by a margin of almost 100 points last season. That same season also resulted in their offense being shut-out, twice.

Smith described the offense of the 2016 Wildcats as primarily being a smashmouth system that was revolved around a ground-and-pound running game. However, the addition of Vojcak to the coaching staff should aid the Wildcats in developing a stronger passing attack.

“We didn’t have much size on the o-line last season,” Smith said. “But now it’s 50-50 passing and running, and the passing that we have is more spread out.”

Smith believes that the Wildcats are off to a great start in their summer practices.

“Practice has been fun.” Smith said. “Everyone has been competing and enthusiastic. If coach needs something than someone is going to be rushing on the field to fill in. It’s just a good environment.”

Smith also adamantly stated that the key to the team’s success lies in their newfound comradery that they have formed in the offseason.

“Instead of just improving in defense we’ve been coming together as a whole 11-man team.” Smith said. “We’ve just been coming together as a family.”

The Estero High Wildcats will face Mariner for the season opener on August 25th at 7:30 at Estero High.
