On Monday night, two familiar teams faced off as the P.K. Yonge and Eastside High School girls squads matched-up.
The beginning stages of the game were close. Both teams had miscommunication issues and turned the ball over, early. The rock was slippery and it took a quite a minute for both squads to find chemistry.
The Rams let three straight possessions end in traveling or the ball going out-of-bounds. P.K. started to find rhythm early, taking advantage with five straight buckets off fast break opportunities. Eastside fell behind after giving up too many second-chance opportunities.
The Blue Wave led 11-2 after one.
P.K. senior guard Lauren Moore said the team had a mission going into the second quarter.
“We wanted to pick it up and play better after only scoring 11 points,” Moore said.
In the second quarter, they were able to execute.
They played very comfortable, as if this was not a road game for them. They went on a 17 -2 run and kept their foot on the gas.
Moore let off three long-range shots in the quarter to help P.K. keep control. Eastside continued to be aggressive and attack the paint. The Rams tried to put different defenders on the guards, but they kept shooting without hesitation.
P.K. scored 31 points in the second quarter, and their confidence was loud and in full effect. The Wave led 42-6 at the half.
The second half of the game was much of the same story.
The distribution of the ball on offense for the Blue Wave kept the defense at bay. They attacked the basket and shared the ball very efficiently. They were flawless down the stretch.
The struggles on both offense and defense prevented the Rams from being effective. Even though nothing was clicking, they remained aggressive in the battle. P.K. left the court with a 54-12 win.
After the game, P.K. head coach Willie Powers spoke on what he wanted his team to take away from this win.
“One thing we can take away from the game is knowing our post can score. That’s going to be very important, especially down the line in district games. If we win in the post 90% of the time, we can win the game,” Powers said.
A game like this could serve as a special spark around this time of the season.
